Rocky bluffs and cedar-covered hills along Lake Bridgeport in Wise County, Texas

Lake Bridgeport Homes for Sale & Lake Guide

Lake Bridgeport covers about 12,000 acres in western Wise County and Jack County, just west of the town of Bridgeport and about an hour northwest of Fort Worth. It’s one of the deepest, clearest lakes in North Texas, with rocky bluffs, cedar-covered hills and about 170 miles of shoreline. Lake homes range from older cabins on quiet coves to newer homes in Runaway Bay and along the north arm toward Chico.

We live in Decatur, about 20 minutes from the lake, and Lake Bridgeport is in our home county. Buying on the water comes with questions a regular home doesn’t, from dock permits to lake levels, and we’ll walk you through every one. Book a time to talk and we’ll help you find the right spot on the lake.

Why People Move to Lake Bridgeport

  • Hometown lake: right here in Wise County, minutes from Bridgeport, Decatur and Chico
  • Private docks allowed: waterfront owners can build permitted docks and boathouses
  • Deep, clear water: depths of 80-plus feet and rocky shorelines make it a favorite for boating and swimming
  • Fishing: Texas Parks and Wildlife rates the lake excellent for crappie and for white and hybrid striped bass, and good for black bass and catfish

Lake Bridgeport Real Estate Snapshot

Lake Bridgeport homes run from older lake cabins and weekend places to custom homes on the bluffs and golf course homes in Runaway Bay. Price depends on the water: deep water, a gentle slope to the shore and a usable dock spot sell at a premium, while steep bluff lots and shallow coves usually cost less. We always look at how a lot reaches the water, not just the house. For current prices and new listings, see the live listings at the bottom of this page.

Docks, Permits and Lake Levels

Lake Bridgeport is owned and operated by the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD), which has a lake office in Bridgeport. Docks, boathouses and other shoreline structures need a TRWD permit, and fully enclosed boathouses aren’t allowed. If you’re buying a home with an existing dock, we’ll make sure it’s permitted.

The lake’s normal full level is 836 feet above sea level. As a water-supply lake it drops in drought and rises after heavy rain, and TRWD sometimes closes the lake to boating during high water to protect the shoreline. We look at a property’s elevation, flood risk and water access in a low year before you make an offer.

Things to Do on Lake Bridgeport

  • Public boat ramp: TRWD runs a free public boat ramp near the dam
  • Wise County Park: lake access on the north end of the lake
  • Runaway Bay: a lake community on the south shore with its own golf course
  • Fishing: about 90 miles of boulder shoreline, plus gravel humps near Windy Point and Steele Island that hold white bass and black bass

Lake Bridgeport Schools

Most homes on the lake are served by Bridgeport ISD, with Chico ISD toward the north end and Jacksboro ISD on the far west side in Jack County. Boundaries can split neighborhoods, so we confirm the school district for every address before you buy.
